Aventures in Barnes and Noble.
So, April is Poetry Month, and of course that means we are learning about poetry in my classroom. I went to Barnes and Noble to get some books because lets face it, I don't have any. While at the book store I was looking for "Love That Dog," "Bronx Masquerade," and "The Rose that Grew from Concrete." This exchange actually happened while in a Barnes and Noble in the Upper West Side.
"Um, sorry to bother you again. I think Tupac Shakur has this book with a CD in it, could you check for me?" -Me
"Sure, but we don't carry CDs, only top ten. And if he had a CD in a book it would be stolen for sure." -Middle-aged white lady in a pink sweater very matter a factly.
"..." -Stunned silence from me, the expression on my face must have said it all because she quickly looks back at her computer and doesn't say anything.
"I mean...er...you know... in general. It would get stolen in general..." -She doesn't look at me while she says this.
I can't believe shit like this still happens. Sarah thinks I'm being to sensitive, that it probably has nothing to do with race, but who knows right? Lets hope it didn't.
